Re-Cycle (Bikes to Africa)

Verified by MissionFish since 2009. MissionFish charity ID 34325.

We collect unwanted bikes in the UK and ship them to Africa where they help change lives, saving long walks to get healthcare, education and employment. In 12 years we have sent more than 37,000 bikes to 14 different countries. Our partners in Africa run bike workshops, creating employment and ensuring that bikes are maintained after distribution and so kept in use for many years to come :) Please tell your cycling friends

Marzocchi Bomber 55 R Damper problem Stiff lack of travel

See Below for instructions on how to resolve a Marzocchi Bomber 55 R 2009

Marzocchi Bomber 55 R --- Problem Damper Lack of Travel

»Marzocchi Bomber 55 R with only 30mm travel instead of the quoted 160mm ! they were Very very stiff and i was unable to compress the fork. they felt like they were locked out.

TFT wont even service these forks!

Anyway - i couldn't fine a replacement damper and couldn't get them fixed.... The fork has a nitrogen canastor instead instead of an open bath system which often fails.
So by releasing the nitrogen and allowing the oil flow, the forks starts behave as it should and feel nice a plush again.

Tools needed:

» Drill or a Dremil (i used a bench Drill with made the process very quick and steady)
» 1.5mm drill bit
» Fork oil (160-180 cc of 7.5w)
» 20 minutes

To Remove the Cartridge.
Loosen off the top cap, using a 27 mm socket or adjustable spanner, now that the damper in no longer screwed in; you should feel that the forks work properly again.
up turn the fork and pour out the small amount of oil. (about 50cc)
Undo the bolt at the bottom of the leg and the whole damper will come out.

Step One = Drill a 1.5 mm hole 21mm from the bottom of the hexagon nut.

The cartridge will loose pressure. Don't expect a huge BANG ... It only did a quiet psssssssssss.
At the end of the cartridge there is a seal. Drilling here first only lets the nitrogen out. This is why this step is very important...
If you drill somewhere else the pressure will push the oil out and the result is a huge mess.

Step Two = Make a 1.5mm hole at 35mm from the bottom of the cartridge.

The oil will begin to leak so have a pot or a rag handy.

-
Step Three = Make a 1.5mm hole at 12mm from the top of the tube. Max Depth of drilling 4mm(or you could damage the piston)

Now The oil will pour out with ease and you will be able to cycle the rod trough all the travel. Make sure the respect the 4 mm  otherwise you can damage the rod.

Step Four = Make sure the cartridge has no oil in it and then re-assemble the cartridge in the fork. Screw it in at the bottom.

Step Five = Fill back up with 7.5w suspension oil (quantity varies from 160 cc to 180cc)  The tighten it back up at the top.

ReInstall the fork and go for a test ride!!
Schweet!
